World War Two bomb 3,500 residents in Cologne affected

Köln · An unexploded bomb from World War Two was found in Cologne. Experts will be brought in to defuse the bomb Thursday afternoon.

A few thousand people will have to be evacuated on Thursday when bomb disposal experts deactivate a bomb left over from World War II. Traffic delays are also to be expected in the area.

Officials say there is at least one bomb that needs to be disposed of. The area of evacuation includes the Mülheimer Bridge, which crosses the Rhine River and is an important traffic artery. It also includes the Sozial-Betriebe-Köln (SBK) which has around 600 places for long term nursing care as well as other residents.

Altogether, authorities say around 3,500 people will need to be evacuated. The evacuation will begin in the morning but the bomb deactivation is expected to take place in the afternoon. Officials say they will try to keep the Mülheimer Bridge open as long as possible.
