A 23-year-ol man was killed in a severe accident on the A3 late on Sunday night. Near Königswinter-Bockeroth his vehicle came off the carriageway. As the fire brigade Königswinter reports, the car turned over several times before coming to a halt in the ditch. The 23-year-old man from Darmstadt was thrown from his car during the impact and was lying on the grass verge severely injured when the first responders arrived. Due to the severity of his injuries the man passed away on the scene of the accident.

Because there were no eyewitnesses, the emergency staff wanted to make sure that no other persons were involved and searched the area by thermal imaging camera. Tracking dogs and a helicopter were also used in the search. As the police told the GA, the driver apparently was on his own. No other vehicle occupants were found.

The cause of the accident remains unclear and the investigations are continuing. 45 fire officers were called out to the crash site. The traffic was reduced to a single lane for the duration of the rescue mission.

In the past few weeks and months there have been several severe accidents in that area on the A3. In May, two women were seriously injured in a rear-impact crash, and also February and March saw serious accidents in that stretch of the motorway.
