Swimming pool closures 2071 people sign petition to retain Kurfürstenbad

Bad Godesberg · The campaign to keep Bad Godesberg’s Kurfürstenbad open is gaining pace. Campaigners want to collect 10,000 signatures by 10 November.

Around 50 participants in the campaign to keep the Kurfürstenbad open were collecting signatures on Saturday in Mehlem, Lannesdorf, Plittersdorf, Rüngsdorf, Heiderhof and Bad Godesberg centre. When the signatures were counted at the Café San Marco on Saturday evening, the campaign had a total of 2071 signatures. “We have reached our first goal,” stated Axel Bergfeld, who started the public petition together with Wolfram Kuster and Elisabeth Schliebitz.

By 10 November the campaign wants to collect the 10,000 signatures needed to require Bonn city council to include the issue in its agenda again this year. Bergfeld said: “We want clarity quickly around the future of Bad Godesberg with a Kurfürstenbad.” Wolf Kuster reports, “a lot of enthusiasm, lots of motivation and encouraging feedback.” Kuster says, “By their vote, many Godesbergers have also made known their frustration with the general development of the area.”

The organisers are planning to expand the collection of signatures across the city over the coming weekend and are optimistic they will achieve their goal within a short time.

On Saturday, Jürgen Bruder, chairman of the Bad Godesberg City Marketing Association, turned down a request by organisers of the public campaign for a extraordinary members meeting. He said all members had been asked whether such a meeting should be held. Eight members had answered and only three of those were for a meeting. “The voting is therefore clear, and the management does not see any need for action on this matter,” said Bruder.
