World Congress Center Bonn 2.5 million euro approved for concert chamber

BONN · An interim home has been found for the Beethoven Orchestra during Beethovenhalle renovations.

The City Council of Bonn has decided to go ahead and commit 2.5 million euro to produce an interim concert hall at the World Congress Center Bonn (WCCB). The plan is that it will be able to house the Beethoven Orchestra and the Beethovenfest while the Beethovenhalle undergoes major renovations. Beginning this Fall, the WCCB will be the Beethoven home for 18 months.

One should imagine the new concert chamber as a mobile, wooden shell which opens up to the audience. Included in the 2.5 million euro are not only the building costs, but the cost of having to move power lines and the sprinkler system as well.

It is possible that this mobile concert chamber could also be used later in the Bonn Opera. Bernhard Helmich of the Bonn Opera finds this a welcome idea since the concert room there is old and out of date, and is not used. Before this could happen, however, much needs to be clarified in terms of logistics and finances.
