Friend of victim now under suspicion 16-year-old girl made attack up

Five men were thought to have robbed and injured a 16-year-old girl at the tram stop Oberdollendorf Nord. But the investigation revealed: The teenager was not attacked.

A 16-year-old was supposedly attacked and robbed by five men at the Oberdollendorf Nord tram stop, on the evening of September 11, 2017. That’s how the alleged victim described the incident. As it appears now, the story was made up by the teenager. The police published these details on Thursday.

According to the girl’s description of the events, she stepped off the tram 66 around 7.15pm, when she was approached by five men. They demanded her handbag. When she refused to hand it over, they allegedly hit her in the face repeatedly. The 16-year-old was slightly injured during the attack. The culprits - who were supposed to be between 26 and 30 years old, three of them were described as dark-skinned - were said to have left the crime scene with stolen cash and a portable charger in the direction of a filling station nearby. For ten days the police searched for a witness.

According to Simon Rott, police spokesperson, this witness was thought to have helped the girl but had not witnessed the incident. But the attack did not happen like this at all, as the police found out. The girl was indeed injured, but not by unknown persons. The 16-year-old now admitted that she was hit and injured by a 18-year-old aquaintance. That incident happened also on the evening of September 11.

The police did not reveal any more details or background information on the crime scene. Because she was afraid she might get into trouble the girl had described the attack differently to her parents and the police. Because the 18-year-old is already thought to have committed other crimes, he is currently in investigative custody. If the girl has to face charges, is not yet clear. The police is „examining in cooperation with the prosecution if this was in fact criminal behaviour“, said Rott. (Original text: Alexander Hertel Translation: Mareike Graepel)
