Underground station partly evacuated 140 firefighters called to Bonn Central Train Station

Bonn · Firefighters were dispatched to the underground at Bonn Central Station on Tuesday evening and parts of the subway station were evacuated. This affected bus and rail traffic.

On Tuesday evening, the Bonn Fire Department had to evacuate part of the underground system at Bonn Central Train Station. At around 7:50 pm, a fire alarm sounded at Thomas-Mann-Straße and smoke ensued. Because the scale of the incident was not known initially, the fire department arrived with a large contingency of around 140 firefighters - it was a city-wide alert for all departments.

In searching for the origin of the fire, authorities quickly became suspicious that expansion joints could be the source, and this was confirmed when they found the contraction grouting or joints on fire in a technical room at one end of the train station. Wearing respirators, the firefighters extinguished the fire and cleared away the smoke from the affected area.

Last Thursday, December 14, there has also been an alarm in the same vicinity of the so-called “Bonner Loch” - the area just across from the train station. Initial information from authorities said that incident involved paper that had been burning in the restroom area. GA was not able to get a response Tuesday evening from authorities on whether or not there was a connection between the two incidents.

The fire alarm had quite an impact on bus and rail transportation. Because of the increasing smoke, lines running on tracks 1 and 3 had to be moved to tracks 2 and 4. According to SWB spokesperson Werner Schui, both tracks were available for the rerouted traffic throughout the incident.

Above ground traffic was also significantly impacted. Tram Lines 61 and 62 could not run over Thomas-Mann-Straße. Buses also could not use that street and had to make an alternative stop at Rabinstraße. Lines 602/604/605 which were traveling in the direction of northern Bonn, were not able to use the stop at Friedensplatz. The restrictions were lifted late Tuesday evening.
